Hong Kong-based electronics giant HTC is deploying a new blockchain router – allowing customers to launch a full Bitcoin node right at their home.
The new device – dubbed EXODUS 5G Hub, is scheduled to launch in the second quarter of this year. EXODUS 5G Hub aims to improve data privacy in home space by allowing users to keep private keys through hardware wallets. According to the decentralized director of HTC Phil Chen, the goal is to challenge the dominance of smart devices manufactured by tech giants like Amazon Alexa, Google Nest, Facebook, etc. – which makes users' private data vulnerable.
“Today, any application that says they are using end-to-end encryption, they themselves are using software keys to secure your data or transmit your messages,” Chen told The Block. “And when you use the software key, that means that the key is on the operating system and cloud companies will have access to it.”
“Almost every day you see a hack or data misuse … from email, credit scores to health data and private search data,” he added.
The blockchain router will try to resolve this vulnerability by allowing users to run a Bitcoin full node through Zion vault – the key management platform powered by HTC hardware. Users will be able to forward transactions independently of any third party. At the same time, each user is contributing to the security of the entire network by forwarding transactions made by others.
Exodus is known as the pioneering blockchain smartphone. The first model – called EXODUS 1, was released in December 2018. The company then launched EXODUS 1s – a smartphone capable of running a Bitcoin full node, and then EXODUS 1-BINANCE – a model Limited-edition phones that support Binance's native blockchain integration.
“Having cryptocurrencies in smartphones is very important for mass adoption,” Chen said. Routers, on the other hand, address a variety of consumer needs and focus on home space.
"Houses are temples of privacy. But right now, for convenience, we have used voice systems and cameras, so our homes are easy to hack, "he continued.
EXODUS 5G Hub has integrated with a number of security applications such as ProtonMail email service, Brave open source Internet browser, decentralized anonymous VPN. The company has also partnered with other players in the ecosystem including Binance and decentralized financial products (DeFi) such as Compound and Uniswap, Chen revealed.
